Joe Debonis, LMSW
My Approach
I build therapeutic relationships rooted in authenticity, honesty, and deep trust. My style is curious, candid, and grounded in empathy — creating a space where real exploration and growth can unfold. I believe therapy works best when it feels both intellectually rigorous and deeply human, balancing insight with practical support tailored to the complexities of your life. My approach is evidence-based and trauma-informed, integrating DBT, CBT, Internal Family Systems (IFS), and mindfulness with psychodynamic and relational perspectives when helpful. I earned a Master of Science in Social Work (MSSW) in Advanced Clinical Practice from Columbia University, where I was a member of the DBT Training Program and Lab through the Behavioral Tech Institute. I also hold an MBA from Dartmouth College which greatly informs my work with driven professionals.
Couples Therapy
I work with couples navigating relationship and family issues, communication breakdowns, and moments where connection feels strained or out of reach. Drawing on the Gottman Method and relational perspectives, I help partners understand the patterns between them and build towards greater emotional attunement and trust. My approach is direct and compassionate, creating room for honest dialogue and meaningful repair.
Individual Therapy
I support adolescents and adults navigating anxiety, depression, self-esteem challenges, life transitions, and emotion regulation. I have particular experience working with LGBTQIA+ clients and those in high-pressure academic and professional environments — contexts I understand intimately from my 15 years in management consulting and investing, where I managed teams in highly stressful, perfectionistic corporate settings.
What It's Like to Work Together
I bring both clinical expertise and real-world perspective to our work, understanding the unique pressures of navigating high-stakes environments, identity exploration, and the pursuit of meaningful change. My goal is to help you move beyond simply coping and toward a life that feels more authentic, grounded, and aligned with who you truly are.
